About Church's Battery D

Church's Battery D, First Michigan Light Artillery is a Civil War Living History artillery unit founded in 1979. Founding members included "Boots" Newkirk, James Newkirk, Lloyd Jones & Lloyd Gene Jones.

We are comprised of soldiers who man the cannons and civilians representing folks around the camps including families and children in era-specific fashions. Our group's history spans generations including founding members' families, their children and even grandchildren.

We welcome new members!

Members participate in events throughout Michigan and other states during warm weather months. Events are often held at local parks. Some even include villages and towns which are used as part of the events.

Our purpose is to share the heritage and memory of the American Civil War by promoting patriotism. We also wish to promote muzzle loading and/or black powder use and competition. We enjoy engaging the public to entertain, enlighten and educate about daily life in the military camps and beyond.

Remember & respect. All gave some, some gave all.

We respect all those who served (past and present), especially those who gave their lives to protect our nation and our freedom.

We are not here to glorify war or express any political opinions.
